Lofi on drums, keys and a whole beat without losing the low end

Answer in brief

Put the heaviest lofi on keys, samples and pads and a lighter touch on drums. Keep the kick, 808 and bass out of the wobble and the filters. On a whole beat, blend the effect in with a mix knob and check the low end in mono.

Keys, pads and samples

This is where lofi sounds best. Wow and flutter turn a clean electric piano into something warm and slightly unsteady, while noise and a low-pass filter push it back into the room. You can go further here than anywhere else in the beat. If the chords start to sound seasick in a way you did not want, sync the wobble to the tempo or slow it down.

Drums

Drums need less. Pitch wobble on drums sounds more like sloppy timing than character, so keep wow low or off. Bit and sample-rate reduction, a little saturation and firm compression do more for a kit. Add noise to the drums only when they are the main thing in the beat, because hiss under every hit builds up fast.

The whole beat

Lofi on the master ties everything into one worn sound, but it also hits the kick and bass along with the rest. Keep most of the clean signal with the mix knob, and set the effect so you would only notice it when it is gone. RC-20 has a single Magnitude slider that scales all of its processing at once, which suits this kind of light touch.

Keep the low end solid

  • Route the kick, 808 and bass around the lofi bus, or put the effect only on the parts above them.
  • Keep the high-pass on a lofi plugin low, or off, on anything that carries bass.
  • Watch the wobble on bass. Pitch drift on a sub note sounds out of tune long before it sounds vintage.
  • Check the beat in mono. Stereo wobble and chorus can thin the bass when the two sides are summed.
  • Compare at the same loudness, since lofi effects often drop the level and quieter reads as smaller.

A routing to start from

  • Keys and samples: wobble, noise and a low-pass on their own bus.
  • Drums: light saturation and bit reduction with little or no wobble.
  • Kick, 808 and bass: dry, or with saturation only.
  • Master: a lofi effect at a low mix setting, if the beat still sounds too clean.
