Vinyl, cassette, reel tape, VHS and old samplers compared

Answer in brief

Each old medium fails in its own way. Vinyl crackles and rumbles, cassette hisses and dulls the top, and reel tape drifts and saturates. VHS adds noise and chorus, and old samplers add grit. Choose the medium first and the plugin follows.

Vinyl

A record’s sound comes from the whole chain: the cut, the pressing, the turntable and the needle. Dust and scratches bring crackle and pops. The inner grooves of a side lose some top end and distort a little. Waves made Abbey Road Vinyl with Abbey Road Studios to model that chain, down to the tone arm and a turntable slowing to a stop. iZotope’s Vinyl is the simple free take on the idea.

Cassette

Cassette tape is narrow and slow, so it hisses and loses high end, and cheap decks add wobble. Each tape formulation sounds different. Wavesfactory models four in Cassette, from standard ferric to metal, which it describes as having firmer bass and louder highs. Cassette suits keys, guitars and vocals that should sound like a home demo.

Reel-to-reel tape

Wide, fast tape sounds clean, so the lofi version usually comes from consumer machines in poor shape. AudioThing based Reels on a Japanese portable recorder found at a flea market and says plainly it is not for hi-fi mastering. Expect motor noise, drift, dropouts and a tape stop. Arturia’s Tape MELLO-FI takes its tape character from its Mellotron V, a model of the keyboard that played back strips of tape.

VHS and 1980s gear

Video tape and budget 1980s studio gear add their own mix of noise, chorus and small dark reverbs. Baby Audio gathers that era into six one-knob effects in Super VHS, including a chorus inspired by the Juno’s and a “bad hall” reverb.

Old samplers

Early samplers stored sound at low rates and with few bits to save memory, and producers fed records into them. The result is grainy, a little dull and tightly squeezed. RC-20 Retro Color has a Digital module for this, and iZotope added a Lo-fi mode to Vinyl for the tone of records resampled in the late 1980s.

The practical advice here is our own. A maker's description of its product is not a test of how it performs.
